Hopehill

A farm of 5,000 acres, situated off the Main South Road, about six miles from Dunedin, beyond Allanton. Mostly sheep country but with some rich arable land along the Taieri River and a fine herd of dairy cows. There were hens, turkeys and geese in the farmyard and peacocks in the gardens. The kitchen always had bacon hanging from the beams and tea came with the flavour of the gum leaves from the trees around the house.
