An inquest on the body of John Kirkland, aged 49 years, was held at East Taieri on Saturday before Mr H.W. Bundle, S.M., sitting as coroner. According to the evidence, deceased had been living on his brother's farm at East Taieri, and had been in the habit of indulging in drinking bouts. Dr Peters considered that death was due to cardiac failure caused by chronic alcoholic gastritis, and a verdict to that effect was returned.
