James taught at Mornington and Southbridge schools before giving up teaching to study theology.
He studied at Otago University and a theological college in New Zealand before moving to Edinburgh to study theology for three years. During vacations, he travelled in Europe.
After returning to New Zealand, James was assigned to Presbyterian churches in Waiaroka and then Lawrence.
James died unexpectedly following an operation at a private hospital in Dunedin.
