James was commandeered by the Press Gang but left his business of Stocking framer in Glasgow (Hushens) and went off to Gilmincroft, Auchinleck, taking his mother's name, Hilston, until the fighting was over. He then resumed the name of Girvan and had the sawmill on Auchinleck Estate (Templetoon).
