Martha married late in life, after retirement from a long career in teaching which she had already begun at the age of 17.
A branch of the Girvan family settled in Liverpool and the Rev. John Girvan noted how Martha showed a resemblence to those Girvans. Their crest is a dove and their motto “Peace”.
